How Many Seconds?

February 3, 2004

This is from the Channel One News script from yesterday. Look at your watch and speak out loud the lines below. It will take X number of seconds. Multiple those seconds by 4,000,000 (our estimate of Channel One’s audience). Figure out the number of minutes and hours and your jaw will drop. Just imagine if 8 million students lost this time. (That is the figure Channel One uses in their sales literature.) This is an example of how Channel One News misuses school time. Notice that this is yet another school day that Channel One has sold an anchor position to an advertiser. Nathan West is an actor for a new movie from Warner Brothers. School time is not only wasted with Super Bowl coverage, but also with the promotion of a movie.

[TALENT=LAUREN]

LAUREN: HEY JANET.  IT WAS QUITE A SCENE HERE IN HOUSTON, TEXAS WHERE THE CAROLINA PANTHERS TOOK ON THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS FOR SUPER BOWL 38. AND THE CAROLINA PANTHERS MADE HISTORY SIMPLY BY RUNNING OUT OF THE TUNNEL. THIS WAS THEIR FIRST SUPER BOWL APPEARANCE EVER. AND THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS, ON THE OTHER HAND, WON THEIR FIRST SUPER BOWL TITLE ONLY TWO YEARS AGO.

LAUREN: THE FIRST HALF CONSISTED MOSTLY OF DEVASTATING HITS BY BOTH THE NEW ENGLAND AND CAROLINA DEFENSES. NO ONE SCORED FOR THE FIRST 26 MINUTES — A SUPER BOWL RECORD. TOM BRADY CHANGED ALL THAT WITH THIS FIVE YARD PASS TO DEION BRANCH. BUT BEFORE THE PATRIOTS COULD DO MUCH CELEBRATING, CAROLINA RESPONDED WITH THIS 39-YARD TOUCHDOWN PASS FROM JAKE DELHOMME TO STEVE SMITH.  SUDDENLY, BOTH OFFENSES CAME ALIVE WITH NEW ENGLAND SCORING ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN AND CAROLINA HITTING THIS FIELD GOAL, ALL IN THE LAST MINUTE OF THE FIRST HALF.

HALF TIME SCORE: NEW ENGLAND 14, CAROLINA 10. THE THIRD QUARTER WAS SCORELESS, BUT IN THE FOURTH ANTWON SMITH MADE IT 21-10 FOR THE PATS. BUT CAROLINA STORMED BACK AND DELHOMME’S 85-YARD PASS TO MUHSIN MUHAMMAD — A SUPER BOWL RECORD — PUT THE PANTHERS ON TOP 22-21. THEN BRADY THREW HIS THIRD TOUCHDOWN PASS, THIS ONE TO MIKE VRABEL, AND DELHOMME TOSSED HIS THIRD THIS 12-YARDER TO RICKY PROEHL TYING THE GAME AT 29 AND SETTING THE STAGE FOR A FABULOUS FINISH. WOULD THIS BE THE FIRST SUPER BOWL TO GO TO OVERTIME? NOT A CHANCE. ADAM VINATIERI, WHO HAD ALREADY MISSED TWO FIELD GOALS, NAILED THIS 41-YARDER WITH FOUR SECONDS TO GO. THE FINAL: NEW ENGLAND 32, CAROLINA 29. VINATIERI HAD KICKED THE WINNER TWO YEARS AGO WHEN THE PATS WON THEIR FIRST TITLE. AFTERWARDS, I TALKED WITH SEVERAL OF THE PLAYERS

LAUREN: ADAM, AFTER THE FIRST TWO FIELD GOALS, WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT OVERCOMING ADVERSITY?

ADAM VINATIERI — NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS, KICKER: YOU JUST GO OUT THERE AND SAY THIS IS A 41-YARD FIELD GOAL NO MATTER IF IT’S IN THE SUPER BOWL WITH 9 SECONDS OR-OR IF IT’S IN THE MIDDLE OF JUNE IN PRACTICE WITH NOBODY AROUND. EASIER SAID THAN DONE SOMETIMES BUT HONESTLY YOU JUST TRY TO FOCUS ON-ON WHAT YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF.

LAUREN: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO WATCHED THE SUPER BOWL AND THEY WANT TO BE IN YOUR SHOES SOME DAY?

JAKE DELHOMME — CAROLINA PANTHERS, QUARTERBACK: JUST KEEP FIGHTING, KEEP WORKING, UMM, AND DO THE RIGHT THING. STEPHEN DAVIS — CAROLINA PANTHERS, RUNNING BACK: ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD UP NO MATTER WHAT, INCLUDING IN LIFE. LIFE IS GOING TO GET EMOTIONAL, YOU’LL HAVE BUMPS IN THE ROAD. JUST ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND STAY POSITIVE.
