Did This Man Steal Your Tax Money?

November 12, 2004

Please visit the National
Campaign Against Channel One
for more information.

The 2004-05 school year
for Channel One News marks an aggressive and disturbing new trend
toward what we will call "Total Commercialism." Channel
One is pushing the envelope every way they can to get more and
more revenue-generating commercial messages into the 12-13 minute
daily
TV show.

In the last two weeks, there have been three guest anchors who
have bought their way onto the "news" show to push their
TV shows and in the most case a movie. Parents and teachers have
been mortified over the years to see dozens of outrageous, raunchy
and drug and alcohol movies advertised on Channel One News. This
movie may not fit any of those categories, but it has not been
filmed yet. That is what is different about this guest host misusing
school time.

Andrew Shue is a has-been actor from Melrose Place. He also runs
a nonprofit organization called Do Something and a new one called
ClubMom. Do Something has been a long-time supporter and endorser
of Channel One News. Well, now it’s payback time for Channel One
and they are helping Shue and Gatorade (a long-time Channel One
advertiser) promote their movie project "Finding Gracie."

Shue was allowed to actually ask students if they would help cast
his movie. This is unheard of. Public school students were actually
solicited by Shue to become part of the cast of his for-profit
movie. Why should taxpayers subsidize the casting of this or any
movie? Why should any movie be promoted during time that is being
paid for by taxpayers to EDUCATE children?

Obligation’s Jim Metrock said, "Make no mistake about it.
Channel One News allowed Andrew Shue to steal tax money from thousands
of public schools. So this has-been actor needs help to cast his
movie and he needs publicity to help create ‘buzz’ about the making
of the movie. He has no right to waste the precious time of middle
school and high school students. That time has a monetary value.
If we lived in a just world, Mr. Shue would have to send a check
to repay our schools. Add Andrew Shue and his casting call as yet
another reason schools should give Channel One the axe."

Notice that Mr. Shue did the moronic Gatorade Play of the Week
segment. This segment is of course one long commercial for Gatorade
and has nothing to do with current events. Gatorade is helping
sponsor Shue’s movie.
