One 30-Second Ad

August 17, 2008

Earlier this year we wrote about a contest Channel One News ran to help Dreamworks get students excited about a summer movie called Kung Fu Panda.

We now have the video of this contest. Actor Jack Black addresses the students directly. He is offering them a role in this movie. (The officials rules only mention a "possibility" of participating in the movie, but Black tells kids that the winner WILL be in the movie.)

This fall Channel One News will pitch more and more Hollywood entertainment pitched to impressionable children. If you think all the movies and TV shows to be advertised in classrooms will be as benign as this animated movie, then you don’t know the past history of CEO Kent Haehl and VP Dr. Paul "Dude, Where’s My Car?" Folkemer.

Watch the commercial that wasted up to 3,000,000 student minutes.

Channel One’s fine print is at odds with Mr. Black’s promise to kids.

"One (1) Grand Prize winner will receive– The opportunity to have students at their school (can be the entire school) to be taped by a crew for a crowd cheer sound effect that could possibly be used as a sound effect in the movie "Kung Fu Panda." A crew will be sent to the school to be taped. There is no monetary value to the Grand Prize."
