Channel One Plans Entire Week of 9-11 Reports

September 9, 2002

Channel One is serving up a week of 9-11 stories for kids. Each day will contain 9-11 anniversary reports. This is one of the big problem with Channel One: the same newscast is broadcast to high school seniors as well as children just out of elementary school.

From today’s Channel One script: (DERRICK ON CAM) THIS WEEK WE’LL LOOK AT SEPTEMBER 11TH FROM A NUMBER OF VIEWPOINTS. WE’LL HEAR FROM RESCUE WORKERS, FROM THOSE WHO LOST RELATIVES IN THE ATTACKS, FROM THOSE WHO WERE IN SCHOOL WHEN THE ATTACKS OCCURRED JUST A FEW BLOCKS AWAY.

Channel One is known for its depressing stories (teen suicide, gangs, heroin addicts, teen depression, etc.). Channel One should have made an effort to cover other newsworthy stories this week and not focus on stories that parents may not want their child exposed to.

Last year, Channel One made a graphic music video out of images of the Trade Towers falling and bleeding people being carried out of the Pentagon. It was not Channel One’s finest hour. This is not the stuff of music videos.
