Gotham Chopra Leaves Channel One

July 11, 2003

Another Channel One on-air
personality has left the TV show. This time it is Gotham Chopra.
Chopra has been a fixture at Channel One for many years. He is the
son of New Age guru Deepak Chopra.

Much like Gloria Vanderbilt’s son, Anderson Cooper, Gotham Chopra
didn’t need the baggage of Channel One News to get doors opened
for him. Chopra
has written two books and had a comic book he co-wrote turned into
a major motion picture, Bulletproof Monk. (The movie flopped.)

Of all the anchors, Chopra was the biggest mystery. His father
has made a lot of money promoting "well-being" and "happiness." Meanwhile,
his son worked for a company that helped advertise Snickers, M&Ms,
Twinkies and Pepsi to a captive audience of children, many of whom
were suffering from being overweight.

His company helped market violent movies to children. Chopra just
looked the other way and took his paycheck.

If this Chopra ever decides to get into the "wellness" business,
like dad, he will have a lot of explaining to do.

Note to young people thinking about becoming a Channel One
anchor:

Don’t do it. There is a reason people are leaving. This company
is as controversial as a company can be. This company is
bad news for
children. Having "Channel One News" on your resume
will be a burden for you, not a help. Care about the students
that are robbed
of school time. Care about the effect Channel One’s junk
food ads have on children. Walk away from this company.
Get a job you can feel good
about – not one that you will have to defend every day.
