Does Channel One News Look Infected?

September 23, 2003

From Jim Metrock:

Somebody at Channel One News really loves the
music of Sum 41. A song called “In Too Deep” has been played at least twice on the air since the start of the school year. It must be a very powerful feeling for a person to pick one of their favorite songs and make up to 8 million young people listen to it.

Channel One News has had a regrettable history of promoting music acts that would make many people sick to their stomachs.

After many years of playing music from explicit CDs (they were careful not to actually play offensive lyrics on air), Channel One is now playing games with parents and educators.

Take for example this particular Sum 41 song. It is from a CD called “All Killer No Filler.” It is not a CD that should be marketed to students in their classrooms, but at least it didn’t have a parental warning sticker. That CD was released in 2001. This group, however, has released a new CD called “Does This Look Infected” and it can be argued that Channel One News is promoting this band and their new explicit CD even thought the song they are playing is from an older CD.

Obligation does not know if Channel One News gets paid for playing the snippets of music that are played at various points in the daily show. They are playing a lot of music and it is safe to say that Channel One News is a greater disruption of the school day than ever before.

Channel One had the gall to promote Sum 41’s music on their September 11th show. They played parts of 12 other songs on that one show. Music from groups like the Foo Fighters and the punk singer Pink were played. Why have all this blaring music bouncing off the classroom walls on the September 11 show?

Let’s be blunt. Channel One has little class. They are frantically trying to make money so their company can survive and they are making extremely poor decisions that will result in even more schools dropping their service.

Other songs that schoolchildren had to listen to on September 11th:

“Marching Through Madrid” — Herb Alpert
“Come Back Home” — Peter Yorn
“God Put a Smile on Your Face” — Coldplay
“For What it’s Worth” — Staples Singers
“Low” — Foo Fighters
“That’s All Right” — Arthur Crudup
“Somewhere I Belong” — Linkin Park
“Somnambulist” — BT
“In Too Deep” — Sum 41
“Morning Star” — The Cooler Kids
“Blueside” — Rooney
“The Sun (Riva Remix)” — Weekend Players
“Feel Good Time” — Pink

Every second these songs are playing on the TV is time that could have been used for learning.
