Channel One News continues to sell its "news anchor" positions
to TV networks and Hollywood movie studios so they can advertise their
latest shows or films.

This time an actor from the WB show One Tree Hill gets to co-anchor
the entire October 3 Channel One News show. Every moment this actor
is on the screen, he is an advertisement for his TV show.

One Tree Hill is in the same mold as the highly sexualized Dawson’s
Creek.

The WB Network has been advertising on Channel One News for years.
This network knows that students are often forced to watch Channel
One and therefore will be forced to watch the ads for shows like One
Tree Hill. This is a wonderful situation for a company like the WB
Network. This company has taxpayers subsidizing the marketing of their
TV shows. The executives at the network must get a big laugh thinking
about schoolchildren being compelled to watch their ads. It is so difficult
to get the attention of children when they are at home, but at school,
Channel One News solves a lot of problems for advertisers. It’s so
easy, it’s almost criminal.

We also included the part of today’s script that shows the large amount
of wasted time devoted to the Gatorade Play of the Week. Who gave Channel
One News permission to play video clips of high school sports? Who
told them they could have sponsored segments on the show in addition
to their two minutes of formal advertising? Who knows when Channel
One will have to answer these questions and others.

Jim Metrock president of Obligation said, "We have students,
who should be doing something educational, watching the Channel One
television show, which is encouraging them to watch more television
when they get home. This doesn’t make much sense. The first two One
Tree Hill shows received a "warning" rating because of the
suggestive dialogue and strong, course language. Do our preteens and
teens need their schools to be promoting this trash? At the expense
of their education?"
