One sandwich = 1,060 calories and 50 grams of fat

January 15, 2006

Why advertise this in classroom?

Subway is one of the remaining advertisers on Channel One News. They also appear to be one of the more mean-spirited advertisers – or, at the very least, a very mischievous one.

Subway sponsors segments on Channel One called “One Step To A Better Me.” These are short feature stories that promote better nutrition and more exercise. These are nothing more than Subway’s “cover” so they can deflect criticism for taking taxpayer school time to promote its products.

Before most of these “One Step” stories, Subway runs a commercial for one of its sandwiches. One would think they would choose to promote one of their “Under 6” grams of fat sandwiches. They never do. They advertise their “heavy” sandwiches that have the most fat content. This is a mean thing to do.

We have reported on their terrible decision to advertise the 1,020 calorie Chicken Parmesan sandwich . Was that just a sick joke on Subway’s and Channel One’s part? Was it a mistake? In December 2005, we learned it wasn’t a mistake and indeed the joke is getting sicker.

The sandwich that is now being promoted before “One Step” stories is the Chicken Bacon Ranch. This has even MORE calories than the “Calorie-Bomb” Chicken
Parmesan.

Covered with cheese and bacon, this sandwich has 530 calories in the six-inch sandwich. That is 20 more calories than the Chicken Parmesan. The fat count is even worse 25 grams of fat to 19.

Subway and Channel One are not only advertising the sandwiches with the highest fat content, they are very clearly trying to convince students to bypass the six-inch sandwich for the foot long. All Subway ads on Channel One News feature the 12-inch sandwiches. This is on purpose. So what if the kids get fatter. Subway will make more money and after all they are sponsoring the “One Step” features that are more responsible than the Subway ads.

The bottom line is Subway is advertising a 1,060 calorie sandwich with 50 GRAMS OF FAT!

Is that a smart thing for Subway and Channel One News to do? Advertisers, not schoolchildren, are Channel One News’s customers. Channel One serves its customers and that is why they will advertise what Subway wants them to advertise, even if it adds to the health woes of students.

Chart is from Subway’s web site

Dec. 2005 Subway
commercial followed immediately by One Step To A Better Me.

Notice the size of the sandwich.

Dec. 2005 Another
ad on Channel One News
. The man is an eating machine. He
doesn’t care where he is. He is eating another man’s lunch in
the other man’s workspace, but that is OK. When you are hungry,
it is OK not only to eat, but to OVER eat, and even eat someone
else’s lunch. Notice again, the 12″ sandwich is being advertised
to students.
