Chris Brown

"we can get some friends
do it like the ying yang twins
[start whisperin’]
wait til’ you see my…
wait til’ you see my…"

Today, September 14, 2006 is Chris Brown Day on Channel One News.

Chris Brown? Who is he?

Well, if you were forced to watch Channel One News, you would know.

Mr. Brown is a singer who needs to support his current tour and to keep up sales of his latest CD. Today, Channel One got a lot of preteens and teens introduced to Chris Brown.

Below is the part of Channel One’s official script that is devoted to Mr. Brown and his music. The length of the interview is amazing. Every sentence, every word came at a cost. There was something Channel One News left out to make up for this rather frivolous use of school time. Was there anything else more important happening in the world than this young singer needing some face time in front of students?

We have put the lyrics to two of Mr. Brown’s songs at the bottom of this article. Although Mr. Brown is only 17, articles have commented on how he is pushing the envelope with the sexual content of his music.

From Channel One’s script for September 14, 2006:

BE BACK

MEKA: WHEN WE COME BACK R&B STAR CHRIS BROWN TELLS US ABOUT HIS RISE TO THE TOP AND HIS FAVORITE PARTS ABOUT SCHOOL.

CHRIS BROWN: CHANNEL ONE. HOLD ON CHANNEL ONE IS FOR THE KIDS RIGHT? I WATCHED CHANNEL ONE WHEN I WAS IN 7TH GRADE!

INTRO CHRIS BROWN

MEKA: WELCOME BACK IT’S TIME FOR THE CHANNEL ONE PLAYLIST. WE WENT ONE ON ONE WITH CHRIS BROWN FOR A LOOK AT HIS LIFE AS A SEVENTEEN YEAR-OLD MUSIC STAR. HE IS THE YOUNGEST MALE SOLO ARTIST TO HAVE A NUMBER ONE SINGLE ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS. WE FOUND THERE IS MUCH MORE TO HIM THAN HIS GREAT VOICE AND DANCE MOVES. CALI CARLIN HAS THE STORY.

CHRIS BROWN

FANS: CHRIS BROWN, CHRIS BROWN, CHRIS BROWN

CALI: ENTER A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE NOT ONLY KNOW YOUR NAME, THEY SCREAM IT. THIS IS CHRIS BROWN’S WORLD, NOT THE AVERAGE LIFE OF A TEENAGER. BUT IN HIS SONGS, BROWN TACKLES SUBJECTS MANY CAN RELATE TO. I SAT DOWN WITH HIM TO GET THE STORY ON HIS LATEST ALBUM.

CHRIS BROWN: MY FAVORITE SONG ON MY ALBUM WOULD HAVE TO BE THANK YOU, A SONG I CALL THANK YOU, I DO AT THE END OF MY SHOW. AND IT’S JUST LIKE ME THANKING MY CROWD, THANKING THE FANS, THANKING EVERYBODY WHO HELPED ME AND ALL THE SUCCESS I’VE BEEN GETTING.

CALI: THAT SUCCESS SHOWS IN EVERYTHING, FROM THE 17 YEAR-OLD R&B SINGER’S SHOES, TO HIS BLING, TO HIS MOVES.

CHRIS BROWN: JUST NATURAL. I HAVE CHOREOGRAPHERS THAT SET A STRUCTURE, LIKE DANCE ROUTINE AS FAR AS LIKE IN UNISON WITH ALL THE OTHER DANCERS.

CALI: AND OF COURSE HIS VOICE. HE TOLD US HOW IT ALL STARTED.

CHRIS BROWN: I WAS JUST SINGING IN HIGH SCHOOL, SINGING IN THE SHOWER, TRYING TO GET GIRLS’ ATTENTION, WHEREVER I WENT, WHETHER IT WAS THE MALL, TO OTHER CONCERTS, TO THE POOL OR WHEREVER.

CALI: AND WHAT THE BEST PART ABOUT HIS RISE TO STARDOM HAS BEEN.

CHRIS BROWN: THE BEST PART ABOUT IT? THE SHOWS, I’D HAVE TO SAY THE SHOWS. BEING ABLE TO JUST ALWAYS BE AROUND THIS. JUST A BIG BIG CROWD OF PEOPLE JUST SCREAMING YOUR NAME. IT’S LIKE A BIG BIG ADRENALINE RUSH. IT’S LIKE YOU’RE ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN. YOU’RE AT A RACE BUT YOU’VE WON EVERY TIME.

CALI: HOWEVER, DESPITE NOW HAVING THE ADORATION OF SCREAMING FANS, THERE’S ONLY ONE TRUE LOVE IN CHRIS’ LIFE.

CHRIS BROWN: MOM HAS BEEN THERE SINCE DAY ONE, SO YOU KNOW, THAT’S MY HEART. I ALWAYS LOOK OUT FOR HER, I ALWAYS MAKE SURE SHE’S ON THE ROAD, AND IF SHE’S NOT ON THE ROAD WITH ME, KEEP IN CONTACT WITH HER ALL THE TIME.

CALI: WHILE BROWN’S PASSION IS MUSIC, HE STRONGLY BELIEVES IN STAYING POSITIVE.

CHRIS BROWN: I THINK IT’S BETTER TO BRING THAT POSITIVE ENERGY BACK BECAUSE I THINK PEOPLE WILL FEEL BETTER LISTENING TO GREAT MUSIC. IF YOU HEAR THE SONGS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD, EVERYBODY’S DANCING, EVERYBODY’S HAVING FUN, IT’S COOL, SO THAT’S WHAT I STRIVE TO DO. I WANT EVERYBODY TO HAVE FUN AND PARTY. WHEN THEY COME TO MY SHOW, THERE AIN’T NO PROBLEMS.

CALI: BUT HE WARNS THAT THERE IS MORE TO HIS JOB THAN JUST FUN.

CHRIS BROWN: IF YOU WANT TO GET IN TO THIS BUSINESS, IT’S A LOT OF HARD WORK. IT’S FUN, BUT IT’S A LOT OF HARD WORK IN TO IT.

CALI: AND THOUGH HE REMEMBERS THE NORMAL LIFE,

CHRIS BROWN: WHEN I WAS IN SEVENTH GRADE, I THINK MY TEACHER WAS MR. RANSOM. EVERY MORNING BEFORE OUR FIRST PERIOD, CHANNEL ONE USED TO COME ON. HE USED TO MAKE US WATCH IT.

CALI: BROWN HAS NO REGRETS ABOUT HIS STARDOM.

CALI: DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MISSED OUT ON BEING A NORMAL TEEN EVER?
|
CHRIS: NOT REALLY BECAUSE I LOVE WHAT I’M DOING/ I MEAN I WOULDN’T GIVE THIS UP FOR THE WORLD. I LIKE BEING ABLE TO TRAVEL AND SEE ALL OF THE KIDS. I HAVE A LOT OF YOUNGER KIDS ON THE ROAD WITH ME THAT DANCE. SO IT’S LIKE A HIGH SCHOOL SETTING LIKE THE BASKETBALL TEAM, YOU’RE ON THE BUS WITH YOUR HOMEBOYS AND STUFF LIKE THAT. I FEEL, I FEEL GREAT. IT’S GREAT THAT I’M ACTUALLY BEING ABLE TO LIVE MY DREAM.
CALI: THIS IS CALI CARLIN WITH CHRIS BROWN.

This is the CD that Chris Brown was plugging today. His record company, Jive Records, has arranged this incredible publicity stunt on Channel One News. The good news for Jive and Brown are it’s all being paid for by taxpayers. Up to 7 million schoolchildren put down their books and teachers stopped teaching so Chris Brown could "get personal" with the students. You cannot buy this type of publicity.

The public has a right to know why Channel One News believes it is important to spend time showcasing any musical act? And if Channel One is now seeing themselves more as an entertainment show, why choose Chris Brown to showcase?

The two songs below are typical of Brown’s style. One theme of his is "I’m young, but I can please women." His song "Gimme That" is about exactly what you think it’s about. The current version of the song is the "Remix with Lil Wayne" version. Mr. Brown wants to show his audience that he isn’t a "kid" anymore and he can talk about women as sexual objects just like other more explicit artists.

Sometimes it is hard to fully understand what the artist is talking about. You have to know the lingo and the slang.

In "Gimme That (Remix)" there are these lyrics:

yeah lil patrone lil henna im on cavali vodka — i’m in cavali jeans .. got on cavali boxas
i`m fresha than a newport and um i could work you out like a futon and um
you could leave your birthday suit on, ima leave my boots on, ima leave mah jewels on

What the singer is talking about in the first line is alcohol. Obviously, "Cavali vodka" is referring to Robert Cavalli’s designer vodka. Patrone is a brand of Tequila and "Henna" refers to Hennessey cognac. Although his "guest" singer, Lil Wayne is singing these lyrics, it is Chris Brown’s record.

Channel One should not be playing music from artists that promote under-age drinking (Chris Brown is 17). They shouldn’t be promoting the music of anyone, but if they are going to keep doing this, shouldn’t someone care about the lyrics and the messages being sent to children?

The lyrics below Mr. Brown’s picture above become even more offensive when adults learn what many young people know.

"we can get some friends
do it like the ying yang twins
[start whisperin’]
wait til’ you see my…
wait til’ you see my…"

This is Chris Brown singing these words. They are in the song "Run It." Mr. Brown is paying respect to one of the most vile groups on the rap scene now, the Ying Yang Twins. Type "Ying Yang lyrics" in a search engine and you will be made sick. Brown’s lyrics make sense only if young people know the Ying Yang Twin’s song called "Wait (The Whisper Song)." The lyrics are at this link, but be advised this is very explicit: http://www.lyricstop.com/w/waitthewhispersong-yingyangtwins.html

Chris Brown is winking at his audience. He knows that they know what he is talking about. Guess what song the geniuses at Channel One News played today to start the program for teens and preteens? "Run It!" The classroom was filled with the blaring music of this song. What an ugly way to start a school day.

(Lil Wayne:)

(Verse 1:) Chris Brown
The young boy just turned 16
and I got 6 4’s and hot bikes that I rock
Keep 3 or 4 sweeties on my clock,
but all that swinging in that bikini just might convince him.
Slow all the traffic down to a complete stop,
’cause you speaking that slang that I talk.
That sassy tempo with that walk,
maybe the reason that all this teenies may never see me.

(Chorus (x2):)
Momma you may be 3 years older but you hot (gimme that)
You be talking like you like what I got (gimme that)
I know you like it how I lean in the ‘lac,
You can be in the bac saying (gimme, gimme, gimme)

(Verse 2:)
Ma, take a break, let me ‘plain to you,
What ya body got a young boy ready to do.
If you takea chance to let me put them thangs on you,
I could show you why I make them straight A’s in school.
I’m a HUSTLA! Trust my frame and age.
Got you thinking that I’m just too young to turn your page.

With you on the phone screaming my name.
