From Jim Metrock:

Why would Channel One News tell students that civilization may be coming to an end during their lifetime?

Only Ms. CJ Ketter could answer that.

I have written Ms. Kettler asking her to at least correct the Channel One story as reported on March 18.  I don’t expect her to do so.  She has not been responsive in the past.

Channel One News transcript Tuesday, March 18, 2014:

Next up, a new study by NASA finds that civilization could be headed for a collapse in our lifetime.

The study by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center looked at other empires and civilizations in history and found a pattern to their collapse.

Researchers say even advanced societies can fall apart when the population grows, resources like land and water become stretched, and the difference between the rich and the poor increases. And they say it could happen in the next 15-20 years.

The study does say it is not too late to prevent a collapse and recommends a fairer distribution of resources, cutting back on consumption, using more renewable resources and slowing population growth.

NASA has issued a clarification about its role in the study, saying that while the study relies on NASA research tools developed for another project, it did not directly solicit, direct, or review Motesharrei’s paper. “As is the case with all independent research, the views and conclusions in the paper are those of the authors alone. NASA does not endorse the paper or its conclusions.”
